As Principal, Mehrdad Javaherian, Ph.D., MPH, PE, LEED-GA serves as Technical Director of LRM’s environmental remediation practice. With a unique background in both environmental engineering and epidemiology, Dr. Javaherian has 25 years of consulting experience focused on assessing the occurrence, fate, transport, exposure/toxicity, and remediation of chemical contamination. He holds multiple patents for generation and use of thermal energy for remediation of chemical contamination, generation of renewable sources of fuel, and conversion of waste to energy.
Dr. Javaherian’s project experience includes design and implementation of remedial investigations targeting characterization and delineation of chemical contamination in surface and subsurface systems, and a wide range of ex-situ and in-situ remediation technologies for air, soil, groundwater, and surface water systems. He has particular expertise in remediation techniques targeting chlorinated solvent, petroleum hydrocarbon, pesticides and PCBs, munitions constituents, and heavy metals contamination in soil and groundwater, including the green and sustainable VEG Thermal Desorption Remediation Technology for which he holds multiple patents and which has been successfully implemented on multiple high-profile projects across the US. Working in this capacity on commercial projects with LRM and on federal projects with Endpoint Consulting, Inc., where he serves as a Consulting Principal, Dr. Javaherian’s remediation experience spans both the public and private sectors. He has served as a remediation consultant to several branches of the federal government including the US Navy, US Air Force, and the US Army Corps of Engineers, from whom he has received awards and recognitions. Dr. Javaherian also consults for several industry leaders in sustainable remediation methods, guidelines, and technologies, including the Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) for whom he co-authored the PG&E Programmatic Sustainable Remediation Guidance. He also serves as a technical contributor on remedial technologies to The Environmental Public Health Today.
Dr. Javaherian’s public health experience includes more than 150 toxicological health risk assessments at hazardous waste sites, including RCRA and CERCLA facilities. He has also conducted public health assessments and headed outreach, education, and health consultations to communities impacted by vapor intrusion and poor indoor air and water quality. Dr. Javaherian has served as a consulting health assessor/epidemiologist to the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH’s) Environmental Health Investigation Branch (EHIB) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), and has provided risk assessment services to a wide range of clients in the private and public sectors, including various municipalities and multiple sectors within the Department of Defense.
Dr. Javaherian holds degrees in civil and environmental engineering, public health, and a Ph.D. in environmental epidemiology. His ongoing research focuses on development of green and sustainable remediation solutions and associated filters which minimize CO2 emissions during site cleanup operations. His past research at the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) involved quantitative modeling of the association between the built environment and pedestrian activity. His past research also included development and testing of numerical codes for simulating vapor intrusion and indoor air quality, including contributions to the USEPA and the API. Dr. Javaherian is a Registered Professional Civil Engineer in CA and holds a LEED-GA certification from the US Green Building Council.
